Hidden above a trendy clothing store is one of Newport’s best kept secrets…
Up a small flight of stairs in the independent store Skintrade, The Coffee Room looks over the hustle and bustle of St Thomas’ Square.
It’s a cosy nook that opened just before Christmas 2014, the brain child of Simon Holmes who you will usually find whizzing around the tiny kitchen making his famous sausage rolls.
Here I sat Christmas 2014 and no word of a lie, I’ve not moved since.
What was once just a flat has been completely renovated in beautiful ‘upcycled chic’ style, made by local tradesmen with local materials. It makes for great people watching, especially when they serve the best coffee on the Island from Jasper’s.
Now the food is something special and made fresh to order right before your eyes.
I don’t really know how to put such deliciousness into words, but I hope these pictures will give you an idea.
– Simon’s famous sausage rolls –
– His equally famous giant cheese scones –
– Breakfast bap with everything –
The cakes are divine, usually made right there on site by Sarah and they even have vegan options! (Including the best vegan chocolate cake I have ever had)
– Victoria sponge –
– Vegan chocolate & biscoffi cake (my favourite!) –
– Vegan carrot cake and Rocky road slices –
I recommend this place to everyone. Even if you just go for the coffee, it’s such a lovely little place to take a break. Along with the friendly service, the relaxing atmosphere feels just like you’re in a very talented friend’s living room.
Go check it out. You’ll probably find me too.
